Routine antenatal visits

Please contact the office as soon as you become aware of your pregnancy as some hospitals require you to book early to confirm a place. None of these visits or blood tests are compulsory and more or less may be appropriate in an individual patient.

Prenatal visit

At this visit, we will discuss your general health and well-being, as well as check your immunity to Rubella and chickenpox so that vaccination may be organised if required. Also, ensure you are taking folic acid.

8-10 weeks

This is the optimum time for your initial antenatal visit. Your doctor will see you to review your medical history as well as discuss the routine tests and answer any questions you may have. An ultrasound is offered at this visit to confirm gestation.Blood tests are usually done at 10 weeks to coincide with the Down syndrome screening blood test and include:

  • Full blood examination
  • Blood group and antibody screen
  • Hepatitis B surface antigen
  • Syphilis screening
  • Rubella IgG
  • Midstream urine for microscopy and culture
  • Down syndrome screening blood tests
  • Parvovirus IgG
  • HIV

12-13 weeks

This visit is usually spent discussing the results of your routine blood tests and the results of the blood test and ultrasound for Down syndrome screening.

18-20 weeks

This visit is to review the results of your routine 18-20 week ultrasound.

28 weeks

At this visit, results of the Glucose Challenge test will be discussed and anti-D given if indicated.

34 weeks

Repeat anti-D if indicated.

36 weeks

At this visit, your doctor will offer an ultrasound to confirm your baby is coming “head first”.

38 weeks

Weekly visits until delivery.
